Upper Gate
The only fully preserved of the three medieval town gates.
Location
The Upper Gate is one of the most important remains of once-fortified Ohrid and one of the three main entrances to the medieval town. It stands near the Ancient Theatre and the Church of the Virgin Peribleptos, on the way to Samuel's Fortress.
The gate was part of the town's defensive system and allowed controlled access to the upper parts of Ohrid. Numerous archaeological finds discovered around it testify to the town's rich past.
Today the Upper Gate is an important historical point and a fine spot from which to continue towards the oldest and most significant parts of the town.
