St. Sophia

11th-century cathedral with frescoes of world significance.

Location

The Church of St. Sophia is one of the most important monuments of medieval Ohrid and one of the town's recognisable symbols. It was built on older foundations, and the present church dates from the 11th century, from the time of Archbishop Leo of Ohrid. In the Middle Ages it was the cathedral and seat of the Archbishopric of Ohrid.

Its interior is famous for valuable frescoes from the 11th, 12th and 14th centuries, major achievements of Byzantine painting. During Ottoman rule the church was converted into a mosque and some frescoes were covered over – which in fact helped preserve them.

Today St. Sophia is not only an important heritage monument but also a striking venue for concerts and cultural events, especially during the Ohrid Summer Festival. Its architecture, acoustics and historic ambience lend a special atmosphere to every event held within it.
