Mančevci Site
Early-Christian basilica from the 4th–5th century with a preserved floor mosaic.
Location
In the heart of old Ohrid, near St. Sophia on the way to the Ancient Theatre, lies the archaeological site of Mančevci. Remains of an early-Christian basilica from the 4th–5th century were discovered here – evidence of the early spread of Christianity in Ohrid.
Archaeological excavations began in 2007, and about 200 square metres have been explored so far. The well-preserved floor mosaic with decorative motifs characteristic of the period draws particular attention.
Fragments of frescoes and marble architectural and decorative sculpture have also been found. Mančevci is one of nine known early-Christian basilicas in the Ohrid area.
Today the conserved remains and mosaics let visitors touch one of the oldest layers of the town's history directly.
