St. Clement of Ohrid Square

In the heart of modern Ohrid lies St. Clement of Ohrid Square, one of the liveliest spots in town and the natural starting point for exploring its old core. In the centre of the square rises the monument to St. Clement of Ohrid – one of the most important spiritual and educational figures connected with the town and its patron saint.

St. Clement is inseparably linked with the development of Slavic literacy, education and spiritual life in the region. His work in Ohrid left a mark felt throughout the town's entire medieval development. He is also one of the most frequently depicted figures in Ohrid's art – the collection of the National Institute and Museum of Ohrid keeps some of the oldest known icons bearing his image.

From the square you can easily continue towards the old bazaar, the old town core and the lakeshore. Today this is where the everyday life of Ohrid meets its historical heritage.
