Samuel's Fortress
Symbol of medieval Ohrid with a panoramic view of the town and lake.
Location
Samuel's Fortress is one of the most recognisable landmarks of Ohrid and a symbol of the town's medieval past. It rises on the highest part of the Ohrid hill, and its massive walls offer a wide view of the town and Lake Ohrid.
The present system of fortifications is largely connected with the time of Tsar Samuel, who at the end of the 10th and the beginning of the 11th century chose Ohrid as the capital of his state. Archaeological research, however, shows that the hill was fortified and used much earlier, as far back as antiquity.
The fortress was an important defensive and political centre, and its walls protected the town from attacks for centuries. Within the complex, remains from different historical periods are preserved, making the fortress a chronicle of Ohrid's development.
The walk along the ramparts is especially impressive – from there you can see the old town, the lake and the surrounding mountains. Today Samuel's Fortress is one of the most visited places in Ohrid and a must for anyone who wants to feel the town's medieval atmosphere.
