Plaošnik
St. Clement and Panteleimon — the cradle of Slavic literacy.
Location
Plaošnik is one of the most important archaeological and spiritual sites in Ohrid, a place where the town's history can be read across many centuries.
Remains of early-Christian basilicas were discovered here, most notably the great basilica with impressive floor mosaics. In the medieval period Plaošnik became closely connected with St. Clement of Ohrid, who in the 9th century restored an older church and dedicated it to St. Panteleimon.
It was here that St. Clement founded his literary and educational centre, which is why Plaošnik is considered one of the key places in the development of Slavic literacy and culture.
The complex includes today's church of St. Clement and Panteleimon, built on the remains of the medieval church. Archaeological research has also revealed tombs, architectural remains and objects from different historical periods.
Particularly striking are the mosaics with geometric and plant motifs, testifying to the richness of early-Christian art. Today Plaošnik is a place where archaeology, spirituality and a beautiful view of Lake Ohrid meet.
For visitors, this is one of the places that best tell the story of Ohrid as a town of faith, literacy and culture.
