St. John at Kaneo
13th-century church on a cliff above the lake — Ohrid's most photographed spot.
Location
The Church of St. John at Kaneo is one of the most recognisable symbols of Ohrid and one of the most photographed places in the town. It stands on a cliff above Lake Ohrid, where the old town meets the lake.
It was built at the end of the 13th century, and its architecture is notable for the elegant cross-shaped form and the decoratively treated dome. The church is dedicated to St. John the Theologian, and the name 'Kaneo' is linked to the former fishing settlement in this part of town.
Valuable medieval frescoes are preserved inside, while the exterior of red-brown stone and brick creates an unmistakable silhouette. From the church stretches one of the most beautiful views of the lake and the old parts of Ohrid.
The view is especially striking at sunset, when the church and the lake create one of the town's most famous panoramas. A visit here is almost obligatory for anyone who wants to feel the unmistakable atmosphere of Ohrid.
